Be a “peer leader”!
26.10.2023

It’s far from simple when discussing the successes in the ICT domain of businesswoman Nguyen Hien Phuong, currently serving as the Deputy CEO of Hanoi Telecom Corporation (Hanoi Telecom-HTC).

She’s a rare female leader in an industry renowned for its breakneck pace and relentless pressure. Hien Phuong, an 80s-generation female entrepreneur, has not only realized her dreams from an early age but has also kept her passion for her profession burning steadily. In Hien Phuong’s journey, one question always resonates: Why can’t women excel in the field of telecommunications and information technology?

From hypothesis to hands-on training

Hien Phuong, who received comprehensive education in Vietnam, had the opportunity to undergo specialized training abroad during her career. This helped her broaden her horizons and quickly adapt to the rapid changes in the era of digital technology and the digital economy, ultimately utilizing her strengths effectively in her work.

All of this became the tools that the “female general” of Hanoi Telecom and her leadership team used to find new directions and contribute to increasing the market share and revenue of the company. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Hanoi Telecom not only stood its ground but also managed to achieve significant development after the crisis.

Over the course of 20 years of establishment and growth, Hanoi Telecom has built a solid foundation, establishing long-term relationships with numerous foreign partners, especially in the Asian region. These favorable conditions provided the groundwork for restructuring and reaching larger business goals.

“Even in the most challenging times brought about by the pandemic, we managed to create new products and services, forging a new path for ourselves,” reflected the Deputy CEO.

As evidence, they successfully completed the EcoDC data storage unit, achieving the Uptime Tier III-TCCF and TCDD standards, the first of its kind in Vietnam. They also launched the “Connect with Tutors” service and officially opened the Tekmonk Technology Academy. These services and products play crucial roles in the company’s current phase of development, as asserted by Ms. Hien Phuong.

Returning to the question that once troubled her, Ms. Hien Phuong shared a “trick” for a female leader to succeed: “I always assume positions as an employee to analyze difficult situations. Through sharing and empathy from leadership, employees can find solutions. When your employees trust you as a ‘colleague leader’ in every moment, their dedication to the common cause multiplies—I firmly believe in this!” she smiled.

Sweetness from humanitarian ideas

For over three years, successive waves of Covid-19 outbreaks occurred throughout the country. Hanoi Telecom managed to maintain its production and business activities while taking care of the lives of its employees and actively fulfilling its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Ms. Hien Phuong shared that Hanoi Telecom’s motto is to always stand alongside the community, making the community and society the continuous focus in all of their decisions.

One can mention their fundraising efforts to support the government’s Covid-19 vaccination program. They also participated in the “Waves and Computers for Children” program initiated by the Prime Minister. Currently, the company continues to support and call for help for this program to ensure that “no student is left behind” in the age of digital technology.

“Building and strengthening the education foundation, moving towards digital education in the era of Industry 4.0, is the guiding principle of Hanoi Telecom’s activities as a whole, and our volunteer activities in particular,” Ms. Hien Phuong emphasized.

Every year, Hanoi Telecom implements the LIFT UP THE LIGHTS program, supporting the construction and renovation of schools, classrooms, infrastructure, and equipment sponsorship for schools in remote and disadvantaged areas. Some examples include the Cooc Cooc Kindergarten in Ha Giang (2020), the Con Se Primary School in Quang Loc, Ba Don, Quang Binh (2020-2021), the Chim Van Primary School in Bac Yen, Son La Province (2022), and the Hang Lia Hong Thu Village School in Tua Sin Chai, Sin Ho, Lai Chau (2023).

Adapting to the “new normal” after the pandemic is a significant challenge for all businesses, but there are always “sweet rewards” for those who accept challenges and seize opportunities.

Ms. Nguyen Hien Phuong believes that, with the inherent strengths of a telecommunications and information technology company in terms of telecommunications and data infrastructure, network security control, and long-standing partnerships with foreign partners, along with dedication and responsibility, Hanoi Telecom confidently anticipates and welcomes new waves, striving to compete on an equal footing in the digital transformation race.

Through this, they aim to develop Hanoi Telecom into a national telecommunications conglomerate – an internationally recognized brand that aligns with Vietnam’s dynamic digital landscape.

CEO Trinh Minh Chau – The Exceptional Woman of Hanoi Telecom, an Icon of Patience and Talent!
18.10.2023

In the business world, especially during times of rapid technological change, there is a remarkable woman who has become a source of inspiration and motivation for all members of Hanoi Telecom – Madam Trinh Minh Chau.

“Madam Chau” is a name that was coined 24 years ago when she worked at the joint venture company Sumi Hanel. Later, during her tenure as the first female CEO of Hanel Company, the name became a well-known and highly respected identity, appreciated by multiple generations of employees within Hanel, a state-owned enterprise known for being a leading high-tech electronics manufacturer in Hanoi. Madam Chau is considered the first female general in the business world in Hanoi and Vietnam, successfully taking Vietnamese branded products with high intellectual content to the international market, receiving positive evaluations from partners and customers. As one of the founding shareholders, Madam made a tremendous contribution to laying a solid foundation for Hanoi Telecom, setting the stage for Hanoi Telecom as the first joint-stock enterprise to collaborate with Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing to establish HT Mobile, now known as Vietnamobile – the first and only foreign-invested mobile network operator as of this moment.

With the remarkable successes achieved, Madam Chau is not just a talented leader but also a symbol of a shining example, showcasing boundless passion, unwavering dedication, and perseverance beyond imagination.

Vision and Leadership

Over the past 22 years, Madam Chau, alongside the leadership team of Hanoi Telecom, has guided the company’s transformation from a small-scale joint-stock enterprise with a modest initial charter capital of 8 billion VND. Today, Hanoi Telecom has made significant strides, evolving into a diversified technology conglomerate with a charter capital of 1.6 trillion VND and consisting of nine subsidiary units spanning across 63 provinces and cities. Employing over 3,000 staff, Hanoi Telecom not only provides fundamental telecommunications services but also plays a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the development of Industry 4.0.

Patience and Dedication

Despite facing numerous challenges in the course of building her career, Madam Chau never entertained the idea of giving up, even as a fleeting thought. It seems that challenges only made her stronger, fueling her with fresh and innovative ideas. “Just keep moving forward with enthusiasm and determination; you will reach your destination” is what we have learned from Madam.

The Vietnamobile project is a prime example of attracting foreign investment in the telecommunications industry. Over the past 14 years, it has attracted nearly 2 billion USD in foreign investment. The HTC International Telecommunications project, with more than 13,000 km of fiber optic cables, consisting of 03 North-South backbone routes and the first data center (Eco DC) meeting Uptime Tier 3 standards for both design and construction in Vietnam, is another testament to the resilience of the telecommunications industry. The growth of its subsidiary units, expanding globally with the establishment of VNCS Global in collaboration with Japan’s largest cybersecurity conglomerate, Terilogy, is the clearest evidence of Madam’s determination to overcome challenges and achieve success.

Contributions to Society

In contrast to her fiery nature in business, Madam Chau is a person who quietly engages in charitable activities. She believes in “Helping others from the heart.” It is this heart and vision that has earned her the respect and admiration of her employees, colleagues, and partners. During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, when the company faced significant difficulties in sustaining its business operations, Madam Chau was steadfast in her decision not to reduce salaries and even offered additional support to employees in affected areas, providing financial assistance to families affected by illness. Her regular charitable activities, from building pagodas, schools, and medical stations for disadvantaged children in remote areas, are carried out annually through the Green Sail Fund.

Madam Trinh Minh Chau is not only a talented leader but also an embodiment of determination, perseverance, and compassion. She is the pride of many generations of Hanoi Telecom employees, serving as an inspiration for us to learn, work, create, and contribute every day.

Absolute Security – The Essential Story of Businesses
11.10.2023

In today’s digital age, information security has become one of the most critical and indispensable aspects for every business. It’s not just a moral responsibility, but also a legal requirement and an opportunity to protect a business’s reputation and survival. Below, we will explore the significance of absolute security and the lessons businesses need to learn from security breaches.

Security – A Necessity for Sustainable Business Growth

Information security ensures not only the safe protection of customer and business data but also fosters trust from customers. A security breach can lead to reputational and financial losses, especially when personal customer information is disclosed or misused. This can result in financial losses, a loss of customer trust, and significant costs in terms of time and money to rectify the consequences.

Lessons from Notable Security Breaches

Many high-profile security breaches, such as the Equifax data breach, Facebook – Cambridge Analytica scandal, or the SolarWinds incident, have highlighted the importance of absolute security. Businesses can learn valuable lessons from these breaches. Among them, investing in secure infrastructure, educating employees on information security, and building a comprehensive security strategy have become more critical than ever.

Innovation and Security

Businesses should not perceive security as a hindrance but rather as an opportunity for innovation and growth. By protecting customer information and internal data, businesses can build trust, attract new customers, and drive sustainable growth. This can also help businesses comply with security regulations, reduce the risk of legal violations, and prevent potential liabilities.

Absolute security is an essential narrative for every business in the digital age. It’s not only a moral duty but also a decisive factor for a business’s development and survival. Invest in security, train your employees in information security, and develop a comprehensive security strategy to ensure the safety of information and sustainable growth for the future.

VNCS – Aspiration to Build the Number One Cybersecurity Ecosystem in the Region
04.10.2023

Not only does VNCS contribute to making Vietnam an early center for information security in the region, but it is also accelerating the spread of Vietnamese expertise and intellectual products in the field of information security to the world.

Starting as a telecom enterprise support

About 10 years ago, the concepts of “information security” and “cybersecurity” were not widely recognized in Vietnamese society.

The establishment of the Vietnam Network and Space Security Technology Joint Stock Company (VNCS) in 2011 drew attention because it was associated with Hanoi Telecom, a major player in the telecommunications industry. Hanoi Telecom had previously partnered with Hutchison Telecom to invest in, establish, develop, and manage the Vietnamobile mobile information network.

At that time, Hanoi Telecom was one of the first major telecommunications companies in Vietnam to establish a dedicated information security division (the precursor to VNCS).

Two individuals were entrusted with leading VNCS from its inception: Mr. Khong Huy Hung as the CEO and Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dat as the Deputy CEO.

Mr. Khong Huy Hung, CEO of VNCS.

“At that time, I had six years of experience studying and working abroad, with significant experience in computer engineering and business management. Mr. Dat had just graduated from the Academy of Cryptography Techniques with a focus on information security. During that time, the common term used in Vietnam was not digital transformation but rather ‘the fourth industrial revolution.’ We believed that information security was an essential element in this revolution. While there were some information security companies in Vietnam, none of them had truly stood out. Recognizing the potential of information security in the future, the leadership of Hanoi Telecom decided to establish VNCS with the hope that VNCS would become a leading information security company in Vietnam,” Mr. Khong Huy Hung recounted the beginnings of his journey with VNCS.

Founded within the framework of a major telecommunications company, VNCS had several advantages compared to other startups.

Being born within Hanoi Telecom, we inherited professional work processes and ways of thinking that we could apply to VNCS right from the beginning of its establishment. It has been 12 years since then,” the CEO of VNCS continued.

A unique DSD business model

The information security market is becoming increasingly competitive with the entry of many domestic and international companies. However, VNCS maintains its position with a unique business model: DSD (Distribution, Service, Development).

VNCS owns a comprehensive ecosystem of information security products and services that cater to a diverse range of market needs.

“We are almost the only information security company in Vietnam operating according to the DSD model. We distribute information security software with a high level of expertise, while most other companies in Vietnam only distribute hardware security solutions. Additionally, we provide comprehensive and advanced information security services in Vietnam. Furthermore, we have our own research and development products related to web vulnerability scanning, malware analysis, which have been highly regarded in the market for many years,” Mr. Hung proudly stated.

The ecosystem developed by VNCS includes products and services from leading global providers such as Splunk, Radware, Crowdstrike, as well as an impressive portfolio of “Made in Vietnam” products and services. These include Security Operations Center (SOC) monitoring and management services, penetration testing, incident response, compromise assessment, threat intelligence, digital threat monitoring, and more.

The products and services offered by VNCS help organizations and businesses reduce costs, optimize processes, and make prudent investments in information security. This ultimately enhances overall information security for their systems and contributes to the general growth of the economy.

One of the key success factors of VNCS, as revealed by Deputy CEO Nguyen Thanh Dat, is their emphasis on both human resources and products: “The VNCS team is young, passionate, and always ready to work together at any time to solve the ‘difficult problems’ of organizations and businesses. We strive to select the best talents and new products that can bring significant value to customers and partners.”

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dat, Deputy CEO of VNCS.

In VNCS’s latest slogan, there is a phrase, ‘Secure your growth.’ We hope that VNCS will become a reliable brake for customers as they accelerate their business growth. You can’t go fast without a good brake. A good brake will provide peace of mind during the digital transformation and growth process,” added CEO Khong Huy Hung.

Recognized contributions to national cybersecurity

The 12-year journey of VNCS has been acknowledged by many Vietnamese organizations and businesses.

When Techcombank was looking for partners in the security field, we conducted market research and found that VNCS, although a relatively young company, had a lot of experience. We highly value the expertise of VNCS’s team of experts who truly understand the field of cybersecurity and the security market in Vietnam. We were very impressed with the experiences that VNCS’s products and services provided,” shared Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Director of the Information Technology Division at the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Techcombank).

The VNCS team is ready to assist organizations and businesses with solving “difficult problems.”

Representing the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam, a company that has used VNCS’s infrastructure monitoring, service quality monitoring, and information security event monitoring solutions from 2016 to the present, Deputy CEO Nguyen Hung Nguyen affirmed, “This solution has brought many practical benefits. The most significant benefit is the transparency of information on incidents in the service infrastructure. The quality of VNCS’s human resources is excellent. I hope VNCS can fulfill its ambition to expand internationally and become one of the reputable security solution service providers in Vietnam on the world market.”

Recognizing VNCS’s contributions to national cybersecurity over the past period, Mr. Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Information Security Bureau at the Ministry of Information and Communications, hopes that in the future, “VNCS will continue to grow stronger, both in the domestic and international markets, contributing to making Vietnam one of the strong countries in terms of cybersecurity.”

Ambitions to go global

The year 2020 marked a significant milestone for VNCS when it formed a joint venture with Terilogy, a Japanese network and security company, to establish VNCS Global.

Terilogy holds great respect for the people of Vietnam, understanding their enthusiasm and spirit. They wanted to find a partner in Vietnam to expand into the Southeast Asian market and other countries worldwide. VNCS, on the other hand, sought a partner who could provide support in terms of processes and market development, both in breadth and depth. These two companies came together to establish VNCS Global. We aim to combine the Vietnamese expertise with Japanese technology and processes to bring even greater value to the world,” recalled Mr. Dat.

Establishing VNCS Global is the ‘first shot’ in VNCS’s journey to enter the global market. We jokingly say that we have found a Japanese wife. A year ago, we also established VNCS Asia to reach markets in Cambodia, Laos, and beyond. Our philosophy is to enhance partnerships and collaborations because we understand that alone, we cannot accomplish everything we aspire to. In the future, we hope to find more international ‘spouses’ to shine a spotlight on the VNCS brand, and to bring Vietnamese expertise in information security to the world,” shared Mr. Hung, envisioning the path forward.

The VNCS team is aiming for the global stage with big aspirations.

Heading towards the global stage in the digital age, the leadership of VNCS understands that there are many opportunities and challenges ahead. The ever-evolving technology landscape.

The head of VNCS has defined a clear mission for the next 5 years: “VNCS aims not only to serve customers well in Vietnam but also to expand its operations to many international markets, bringing the intellectual products of Vietnamese people in the field of information security to the world; Accelerating the realization of the ambition to build the number one cybersecurity ecosystem in the region.”
